When Martyrs Die, Demons Rejoice

Our society has completely forgotten the phrase de mortuis nil nisi bonum—the Latin phrase meaning "of the dead, nothing but good is to be said." The wisdom behind it is simple: it is disrespectful to speak ill of someone who is no longer here to defend themselves. But the internet has apparently said, "to hell with that."

There is an ugliness we cannot ignore right now. Many voices online are celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Some blatantly, others more discreetly. I won't name them or amplify their garbage. The truth is, Charlie knew the ugliness he was battling. He was up against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual hosts of wickedness in high places. And now, those powers and principalities are celebrating because an effective soldier has been removed from the battlefield.

Charlie Kirk just received the most glorious honor any Christian could: killed for spreading the gospel. It's why Jesus was crucified. It's why Paul and John the Baptist were beheaded. It's why Thaddeus was beaten to death. The highest aspiration of the faithful is to live in such a way that the enemies of God take notice. When Hell's demons hate you, you're on the righteous path.

Charles James Kirk's death should serve as a testament. Those who oppose the faith don't fear radical extremists. Extremists may cause a lot of ruckus and stir up conversation, but they are not that influential. But when you can shape your messaging and influence the cultural mainstream, particularly younger generations, you become a target. It's why the establishment, the unelected bureaucrats and power brokers in American politics, came after Trump so hard. Turning Point USA was winning young voters in droves. Kirk was evangelizing young minds in droves. The dark principalities couldn't have that.

The wicked powers-that-be do not fear the undisciplined. This is why many politicians get swallowed up by the D.C. political machine. They get elected and, like an 18-year-old on the first day of college, have all these dreams about standing up to the system and fighting the good fight. Then they get comfortable with their six-figure salaries, all the kickbacks, free dinners, free ballgames, develop drug and drinking habits, let their sexual lust get the best of them, and voila! You have another empty suit. Another D.C. automaton. Charlie Kirk knew that alcohol and success in the political realm did not mix.

Satan does not fear the weak. He does not fear the soft teddy bear version of Christianity that makes no demands and has no courage. The HeGetsUs crowd? Harmless. The casual Christians who stroll into church twice a year with their Magic Don Juan suits? Spineless. The guy who wears a bedazzled cross chain around his neck as he strolls out of a strip club with an ounce of weed in his pocket? Spiritless. But men who wear and live their faith boldly and unapologetically are the ones spiritual darkness fears most.

Maybe I'm giving too much credit to those celebrating his death, but they should know how martyrdom works. Kill a man for his convictions, and you make him immortal. Censor speech and ideas, and they are broadcast even louder. That's one reason why Christianity was the world's dominant religion for centuries. It was built on the blood of martyrs. Matthew 10:16 says that the serpent is wise. Maybe he made a miscalculation because they just made a martyr out of Charlie Kirk.

To all of the demonic cheerleaders applauding or shrugging their shoulders at the death of a 31-year-old husband and father of two who had a bullet go through his neck in broad daylight: you've changed our country forever. Mission accomplished. But you've also done something else. You have immortalized Charlie Kirk. You have awakened sleeping Christians. You have emboldened the faithful who will rise up bolder and braver than ever.

And in your attempt to silence a voice, you've given rise to a chorus. It's the paradox of Christian persecution—when one light is extinguished, it sparks a thousand more.

May the faithful live to be the salt and the light. May the spirit of Charlie Kirk roar louder than the cackling cowards online. Ultimately, the Most High God has already won this battle. Evil never wins. Truth always does.
